Reflect: Chinatown
‘Reflect’ is a video art series that captures the combined transparent and reflective qualities of glass. Creating a multi layered image that is saturated with colour and movement, and questions ‘are you looking in or seeing out?’

If you empower a woman, you empower a family, a community, a nation.
As an ambassador for Opportunity International Australia, I have been lucky enough to be welcomed into the homes and businesses of some amazing women in India and the Philippines. Their inspirational stories, spoken with newfound confidence, tell how their lives have been transformed through the help of a small loan. This combined with their own sheer determination to break the poverty cycle enables them to earn an income and afford food, water, shelter and an education for their children. It’s a big change from something so small.
On March 8th it is United Nations International Women’s Day and I time to acknowledge that over 70% of the world’s poor are women and girls.
Watch Ana’s story and be inspired to get involved and make a difference in the lives of people, in particular women, living in poverty throughout the world.
Ana’s Story
Nine months pregnant, Ana was scavenging for food and scraps on a garbage dump. Now, thanks to a small loan from Opportunity International’s microfinance partner in the Philippines, TSPI, Ana has a small business of her own and is giving back to street children in her community.

50 Reasons not to Date a Photographer
Love the scary but true list of ’50 Reasons Not To Date a Photographer’ on the Not A Starving Artist Blog. Here are the top 10:
- They rather hold their bulky camera, than hold hands with you.
- On a romantic date, you’ll watch the sun go down and think “Wow this is gorgeous” and they’ll go “mirror lock, tripod, and stop down f/8 at 1/125.”
- You’ll never be able to enjoy tv, movies, or magazines because they’ll point out all the visual flaws.
- They like to sit in obscure coffee shop and voyeuristically watch people for great lengths of time.
- If you’re taking a walk outside and you come across some “interesting light” they will make you sit/stand/pose in public so that they can take a photo.
- You’ll never get to enjoy freshly cooked meals because they’ll spend 15 minutes taking 20 variations of the same dish with their iPhone.
- They get angry when your friends go up to them and say “I am interested in photography, can you recommend a good camera for me? Nothing professional I just want to take pretty pictures.”
- You’ll wait longer for them to finish analyzing art in a museum than you’ll wait at the dmv
- Same goes with old used bookstores.
- When you think they’re giving you their undivided attention, they’re really wondering how they could fix you with a little Clone Tool and Patch Tool.

Red Lantern shines bright on Crown Street
Every day on my coffee run I walk past a little red terrace on Crown Street that is busily setting up neat rows of chopsticks and arranging a massive display of freshly scented orchards. As the day progresses and into the night the sweet and spicy aromas of Vietnam call you into Luke Nguyen’s award winning restaurant, Red Lantern, run with his sister Pauline and her husband Mark Jensen.
That’s if you can get a booking! Myself, with my friends from Storyhead, had to settle for a ‘school night’ to celebrate our year of adventures travelling around the countryside capturing some great stories for some great brands. We where all eager to experience the full banquet after having got a taste for Luke’s fresh and flavoursome food having filmed him for the Clinique dinner series, as well as being fans of his show on SBS.
The banquet did not disappoint, starting with soft rice paper rolls with pork and duck terrine, vermicelli, cabbage and pickled carrot, rolling onto courses of chilli salted squid, chicken poached in master stock with ginger, amazing pork ribs and melting braised beef – all topped off with a Dessert Platter featuring the crazy good sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf and chargrilled.
Not content with the banquet you can take a little bit of Vietnam home with you, the Secrets of the Red Lantern features many of the famed dishes from the menu plus tells the difficult story of Pauline and Luke’s parents journey from their homeland in Vietnam on their escape to Thailand as refugees, and building a life in Australia.
Keep an eye out for Luke’s new restaurant opening in East Sydney later this year.

Bangalow
Fifteen minutes inland from Byron is a little country village called Bangalow. It’s picturesque main street is filled with historic buildings occupied by galleries, quirky stores, cafes using amazing local produce, and of course the CWA for the latest in knitted tea cosies.
